This body of work has been inspired by my passion for landscape photography and by having an interest in the local area around me. Throughout the East Boldon neighbourhood, there are signposts stating ‘Protect the Green Belt’, which sparked my initial ideas for this project. The community spirit of the East Boldon residents has had a large influence on my work, as they strive to make their voices heard and protect what is important to them.
I have included the coordinates and reference locations of each site that I photographed, as this gives each landscape a purpose and they can be traced on Google Maps. Each site that I visited was ‘considered potentially suitable for development’ meaning these spaces aren’t safe from future developments. The prints are ordered from West to East as if you are walking to each site.
After doing research surrounding blueprints, I went down the alternative print route to create cyanotypes as a way of representing what could be built on the land. I then used a destructive process by submerging the prints into bleach, which faded the rich blues into pale yellows that represented the negative effects of building on the green belt.
